American Beauty

A Curated Private Collection

The flag of the United States of America is no simple national banner; it is the first flag in history conceived to fully embody the identity and values of a modern nation-state. This chronological and political primacy has created, over time, a near-sacred protocol of display, handling, and protection—a unique formal rigor that governs its every public aspect.

The exhibition American Beauty explores this very tension: on one side, the "sacredness" of institutional protocol; on the other, the absolute freedom of art. Through the works in the collection, the stars and stripes become a seismograph recording the defining chapters of American history: a symbol used by masters of vision sometimes to exalt pure patriotism, and at other times to denounce the contradictions of power and give voice to dissent.
