Children

On the side of children, with tenderness. Dario Mitidieri’s children have chosen, despite themselves, to face the world, exploring alternative possibilities within it. Dario stands right beside them. They play with the world, performing acrobatic feats amidst the rubble of humanity; they transform it to understand it, to endure it.

The photographer’s conscious awareness and the child’s sense of discovery are not a mental posture or a frame, but a thorn in the side of harsh reality. Photographed by Mitidieri along the trajectories of marginalization, these children try play as a way to experience a "what if"—translating the inalienable right to fun and happiness into new relationships with objects.

These objects—surreal toys, remnants of war or poverty—become novel tools of an imagination that compromises with reality without ever giving up on transforming it, offering it to adults with lightness: a promise of hope.
